Who I am
Hi,
I’m Alex, a carpenter from Brighton with 5 years onsite experience and a love for anything creative.
My journey with woodwork started at school in design tech class. It was my favourite subject as it felt more real and interesting to me. It helped me focus and feel a sense of achievement that I hadn’t got from other subjects. When I was 15, I decided to invest in some of my own tools and borrowed some from my teacher to make my grandma a dovetail box. It felt nice to make something for someone, so I continued making things.
When it came time to decide my future at the end of my GCSE’s, I had two options in my mind; start A levels to then do architecture at university or go to college to do carpentry. I chose carpentry and never regretted it. Not long into my course, my tutor recommended me to one of his old work mates who had recently started their own company and needed someone ASAP. I was working on site the next day.
We worked all across London and the south doing anything from gutter clearing, fine joinery work to renovations and extensions. We worked together for almost 2 years until I moved to Brighton with my two best friends. I then became self-employed and found my own work which was challenging but worth the stress. I got to do jobs such as fitting kitchens, oak herringbone flooring, cladding, custom wardrobes and more.
Looking for more security in work, I found a high-end construction company based in Brighton that I have now been working at for over 2 years. During this time, I have worked on large scale extension projects as well as the rebuilding of an iconic manor house in East Grinstead. I have been part of the team constructing a double pitch oak roof with 12 gables, oak facia, barge boards and rafters along with doing the interior carpentry work.
